How We Got Started
In the fall of 2015, I moved to Miami. I had taken a startup job and was learning the ins and outs of building a company. It was a total overhaul from my life as an Engineering student in California, but it was a change I needed. It didn’t take too long working for the startup for me to figure out that I liked building companies from scratch. It was just plain fun.
About 3 months into that job I also started to get an itch to teach. I had been a tutor and educator as a side gig for most of my academic career and this was the first time I didn’t have any clients. It felt pretty empty for me. So I decided to jump back into tutoring.
In January 2016, I started East Bidwell to teach Physics and Calculus as a side job. I knew that over time I would go into the business full time. By May of 2016, it was time, I left my job at the startup to give this Entrepreneurship thing a real run.
At the very beginning, it was tough! I wasn’t making boat loads of money, and I didn’t have a ton of experience. I needed a strategy to pay the bills and this is what I figured: I could do club photography at some of the exclusive venues from 10PM-3AM to pay the bills. I would also work on my marketing, sales, and business development skills during normal business hours to learn the game. And that’s exactly what I did, it was exhausting, but I loved it.
Over the next couple years, I built my client list and continued working on other projects with friends. One cool one was that me and a buddy managed a boxing gym in Wynwood for a few years. I felt like the “man”, I was everywhere and life was really non stop.
As life goes, I finally learned that I had way too much on my plate. I was trying to work on East Bidwell, build the gym, run around to photography gigs at night and catering to a couple other one-off projects all at the same time. The money was good, but I wasn’t accomplishing nearly as much as I had originally set out to. So I started to really think about how to move in the direction I wanted to go, I needed to find my North Star.
My North Star was East Bidwell. I decided it was time to drop everything but the main thing, and build that. It became apparent to me that this tutoring and coaching thing was the only constant that I really wanted to pursue. I decided to take East Bidwell to the next level and build my life around it. I slowly detached myself from the photography and the gyms and all other commitments in order to pursue building this company.
Since then, it’s been a little bit of a whirlwind. I have been lucky enough to work with phenomenal families, coach outstanding athletes, and rub shoulders with some of the most famous individuals in the world. I’m lucky to have found mentors that guide me in the right direction, friends that offer their support, and a community that strives to expand their knowledge at an impressive pace. I also was lucky to bring on board some great tutors to help with the workload. Honestly, I can’t wait for you to meet them too. They are decidedly much more impressive than I will ever be.
And…..that brings us to today! East Bidwell is focused on being the academic leader in 1-on-1 education. We have dreams of branching out into other avenues and pursuing different ideas, but if the past is any indication, we should stick to mastering one thing at a time.
If you or a loved one needs help in classes, or test prep, we hope you give us a shot. We know we will do our absolute best to give you the highest quality service in the industry. In fact, we are obsessed with helping you achieve your academic goals.
Oh, and before I forget, you’re probably asking what the hell ‘East Bidwell’ means anyway. It’s actually the name of a street in my hometown. It’s the street where I held my first job, stocking shelves for Target. Hell, it’s the street where I got my second job too, serving fries for In-N-Out Burger. It’s the street that taught me about how fast things evolve and change when group of citizens chooses to build a community. It’s a street that reminds me every day when I walk in the door, how far I’ve come, how much a team can accomplish , and what will evolve from the effort we put in building this company brick by brick.
In short, I hope to live up to the name of this company and provide a service that provides outstanding value and makes you want to build this company with us.
